Whipped Creamy Shea Body Butter

Baraka Whipped Shea Butter Recipe

Rich, light and creamy. With a shea butter base and a touch of coconut, this body butter will treat your skin while the aroma takes your mind to a tropical beach.

  • 1 cup unrefined shea butter
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • ½ cup light carrier oil such as olive oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil or grapeseed oil
  • Optional: 10-15 drops of your favourite essential oil (such as vanilla, lavender, orange, mint, etc.)

  1. Melt your oils and butters (coconut oil, shea butter and carrier oil) in a double boiler. We like to add the ingredients to a glass bowl and place over a pot filled one-third with water. Turn the stove on to medium-high and stir the oils frequently.

2. When fully melted, remove from the heat. Let the mixture cool a little and then stir in your essential oils.

3. Put the mixture into the fridge or freezer until solidified to ensure a good whipping temperature. The ideal texture is solid but soft. Don’t worry if it is too cold or not cold enough, you can always cool it further or let it sit in a warm place to soften and try again.

4. Once solidified, remove from the fridge or freezer. Whip with a hand mixer for about 10 minutes until you have a creamy butter that looks like whipped cream.

5. Spoon or pipe the mixture into a clean jar or container.

Your whipped body butter is all finished! Perfect as a gift, or just for yourself! This formula is super nourishing and perfect for dry skin. We love to use it before bed to wake up to hydrated skin.

Experimenting further..

This whipped body butter is a great base but you can try adding other healing ingredients such as a tablespoon of neem or rose oil. You could even experiment with adding Manuka honey or aloe, or use a combination of shea and cocoa butter. Tweak this simple recipe to your DIY heart’s content – we would love to see your adaptations!

    1. Hi Gwendolyn, yes this is a very nourishing body butter. We would recommend using it on the body only and not the face to avoid clogging pores. You can also use this recipe as a basis for experimenting and formulating your own body butters – feel free to switch out the coconut oil and try something else. Let us know how you get on if you switch up this recipe!

      1. Yes, I love all the butters and oils purchased with Baraka , arrival time is swift, products dated fresh and 100% for my expectations as a soapmaking junkie! ?

  1. Hello I had a question. How do you store the Shea butter as not to go rancid. Especially in the summertime so it won’t melt.

    1. Hi Gordy, thanks for sharing your question with us.

Baraka Shea Butter generally has a long shelf-life, but we suggest using it within at least 18 months from the date you ordered the product.
We recommend storing your butters and oils in their original packaging at room temperature. Dark or low light is best. Refrigeration or freezing can change the appearance/consistency (but not how butters and oils work when applied directly to the skin or worked into a formulation).

      I hope this is helpful.

  2. I am new at making Sheabutter creams. What would you suggest to use instead of coconut oil for the face? As I have very sensitive skin.

    1. Hi Natalie, thanks for your question.

Our Shea butter is unrefined with no chemicals or additives. Unrefined Shea butter has all its properties and vitamins intact. You could blend a light face cream by whipping up the Shea butter with some sweet almond oil. Before any application, please consider doing a spot test with Shea butter on your face first to experience how your unique body chemistry and skin responds.

I hope this is helpful, Natalie.

  3. Hi. Is refined Shea butter as nourishing and healing as unrefined Shea butter? I’m wondering if the refining process removes all the vitamins etc

    1. Baraka Shea Butter is AAA quality and Certified Fair Trade – no chemicals or additives, no animal testing, no harsh industrial processes, just pure, natural, unrefined shea butter that is wholesome, nourishing, and organic. Refining uses chemicals to manipulate the colour and deodorize any natural smell. We do not refine any of our butters or oils. The women who make Baraka Shea Butter do everything by hand, using the age-old techniques passed down through generations. If you would like to see the process click here

If you have any additional questions please let us know.

      Warm regards,
